Menzies Distribution’s drive for greater sustainability has taken an unlikely diversion into the world of bespoke, robust and water-repellent tote bags, rucksacks and toiletry bags.
The group says it is taking recycling to the next level, working with partners including Aura Brand Solutions, to convert disused PVC side curtains from its largest vehicles into colourful, durable bags.
The waste is tested for ‘upcyclability’ and processed in the UK before being shipped for manufacture. No Menzies-related branding remains visible on any bags and the first trial of this initiative will alone divert 17 tonnes of waste from landfill, potentially saving more than 30 tonnes of CO2 from manufacturing and landfill. Materials from items such as car seatbelts and bicycle inner tubes have also been used in the construction of the bags.
This initiative follows Menzies’ move in December 2021 to become the UK’s first distribution business specifying fully recyclable vehicle branding for its final mile vehicle fleet, helping to refine the logistics sector’s approach to modern livery.
“We’re delighted to continue finding new and exciting ways to achieve CO2 savings,” said Adam Purshall, Fleet & Procurement Director at Menzies. “Curtains-to-bags and the recyclable livery programme show that almost anything is possible when pursuing innovative routes to greater sustainability.”
Menzies has been recognised by its peers for its commitment to socially responsible and sustainable practices. The group won the Unipart Logistics award for Sustainability at the Supply Chain Excellence Awards in 2021.
