Connectivity for

Vision Systems

HARTING connectors are used in vision systems for the reliable transmission of power, signal, and data.

HARTING board and interface (I/O) connectors are widely used for the transfer of power, signal, and data for vision systems.  Our connector portfolio offers reliable connect / disconnect in both standard and unique designs that needs like miniaturization, more functionality, and robustness.

Design Considerations / Trends for Vision Systems

The below table refers to frequent design considerations / trends important for engineers designing vision systems.  The recommended products you found above are included and rated for how well they fit these trends.

Miniaturization / Added Functionality
Higher Data Transfer Rates
Robustness
Definition
Visions systems are becoming increasingly complex, yet there is demand for them to be smaller. Reducing size while adding functionality is only possible through components that are smaller or hybrid (e.g. power & data transmission).
Vision systems are increasingly required to produce, process, and transmit more data faster than ever. Connectors used in these systems must be able to carry increased data loads and speeds otherwise they will be a bottleneck in the device.
All components for vision systems operating in industrial environments should have an IP rating suitable for that environment to ensure reliably.
M8 D-code (30% smaller than M12 D-Code) and Y-Code hybrid versions available in addition to standard options.
Up to 10 GBit/s
IP65/67 Ratings
Smaller and lighter than 4-8 wire Ethernet with Power over Data Line (PoDL) functionality.
Up to 10 GBit/s
IP20/65/67 ratings available
75% smaller than standard RJ45 with Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality.
Up to 10 Gbit/s
IP20 (IP65 version coming soon)
Available in even pin counts from 6-100 so only necessary space is used.
Locking levers on the sides of the IDC cable connectors ensure a reliable electrical connection, even under high shock and vibration loads. Optional strain relief clamps protect the insulation displacement contacts against pulling forces on the cable.
Magnetics integrated into connector reduces required board space for the connector.
Up to 10 Gbit/s
IP65/67 with M12 housings

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Vision Systems?

Machine vision systems are made up of cameras and sensors that generate and process Images a machine can use to make decisions. The images provide information about an object that a machine can use to perform a job. For example, an image can provide information on the location and orientation of the object, which the machine can use to pick up the object. Machines can also use these images to make decisions about the object, such as determining if a part is good or bad by comparing the object to a spec.

What hardware makes up a vision system?

Machine vision system labelled with important components
  • Lighting Source: ensures the consistent illumination of an object
  • Camera: physical piece of equipment that takes the picture. Within the camera there are two important components to the machine vision system.
    • Lens: Refracts light in a way that forms a sharp image
    • Image Sensor: Converts photons (light) to electrical signals so the image can be processed digitally
  • Image Processing System (in PLC): Once the image sensor captures and converts the image, the processing system reads it.  It will compare the image with the spec or how the item should look.  The system will make the decision and send a command to the machine.
  • Power and Communication Connectors and Cabling: Electrical connectors and cabling connect all the devices together, power the devices, and share data between them. Connectors are the necessary links of a machine vision system.
