Frequently Asked Questions
What are Vision Systems?
Machine vision systems are made up of cameras and sensors that generate and process Images a machine can use to make decisions. The images provide information about an object that a machine can use to perform a job. For example, an image can provide information on the location and orientation of the object, which the machine can use to pick up the object. Machines can also use these images to make decisions about the object, such as determining if a part is good or bad by comparing the object to a spec.
What hardware makes up a vision system?
- Lighting Source: ensures the consistent illumination of an object
- Camera: physical piece of equipment that takes the picture. Within the camera there are two important components to the machine vision system.
- Lens: Refracts light in a way that forms a sharp image
- Image Sensor: Converts photons (light) to electrical signals so the image can be processed digitally
- Image Processing System (in PLC): Once the image sensor captures and converts the image, the processing system reads it. It will compare the image with the spec or how the item should look. The system will make the decision and send a command to the machine.
- Power and Communication Connectors and Cabling: Electrical connectors and cabling connect all the devices together, power the devices, and share data between them. Connectors are the necessary links of a machine vision system.
